Sanctuary

She escapes into a different world
staying longer each time she flees
she hides behind an empty smile
happy with what she sees.

In her world there is no pain
her love is passion driven
she remembers happy sins
that soon will be forgiven.

We do not know the music she hears
nor the sun that shines upon her face
she has found her place of sanctuary
her perfect state of grace.

This last time she left, she did not return
she now sits behind her smile and hums
looking a little younger every day
as her sanity succumbs.

There is nothing that can touch her
too much has touched her in her years
she has freed herself of life’s reality
she has rid herself of fears.

She rocks slowly back and forth
thumb and finger playing with her hair
she has escaped to her better world
beyond the reach of her despair.
