YOUR WILDERNESS
Something with
claws
was after you; something
dark, in a cave—
You didn’t want to hear
the call. Took off to Montana
with some lover you didn’t
love. Climbed mountains
of scree. Slept in a green
cocoon. Were afraid
of bears. The sky
was a great blue
whale. The fire
was a story, you hadn’t
lived. Tree limbs
shook you. Wind
threatened. Words
got stuck
In your gut
The lover
you did not love
spoke of guns
and taxes. Who
were you
kidding?
They came for
you
the Queen
of the Night
in purple and stars, Bear
Mother, her teeth
her tongue, the beautiful
warrior women, their yellow
eyes, their arrow
words…
